“The Law of Detachment states that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to first relinquish your attachment to it.”
- Deepak Chopra
If you know me well, you know that one of my favorite things in life is a fresh young coconut. Another one of my favorite things is playing around with the Law of Attraction, which is why I combine the two by keeping this picture of a young coconut on my vision board at all times:
So you can only imagine my excitement when a coconut very similar to this one spontaneously popped into my experience last week while I was vacationing in the Dominican. Here’s the story:
I had just finished breakfast and I was heading back to the room to grab something before a trip to the market. As I neared the building, I noticed a team of gardeners looking up at a palm tree right outside my door. All of a sudden I heard a loud “whoosh” as a bunch of green coconuts fell from the tree and landed directly in my path. The gardeners were cutting down all the coconuts.
I squealed with delight. At this point I wasn’t even thinking of the picture on my vision board, I was just thrilled to be surrounded by palm trees. But one of the gardeners noticed my excitement and picked up one of the coconuts. He didn’t speak English, but from his gestures I knew he was asking if I wanted one. I nodded “yes”, so he grabbed his machete and cut it open for me on the spot. Luckily I had my video camera in my pocket so I managed to capture the glorious aftermath:
Words cannot express how happy I was about this coconut. I was glowing for days afterward. There was something in me that recognized that this “manifestation”, happened exactly as they all should: with perfect ease and divine grace. I didn’t have to fight or compete for the coconut, I didn’t have to work hard for it, and most of all, and I didn’t have to figure out “HOW” it was going to show up in my life. I just sat back and the coconut fell onto my path.
But the primary reason this coconut found its’ way to me so easily, is because I don’t sit around all day noticing the lack of coconuts in my life. Yes, I love coconuts; yes, they improve the quality of my life experience… but I can live without them. I was completely detached from any possible results.
Manifesting this coconut reminded me of the importance of the law of detachment. The law of detachment is one of Deepak Chopra’s 7 Spiritual Laws of Success, and it states that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to first relinquish your attachment to it.
Relinquishing your attachment to something is not the same as relinquishing your desire for it. When you harness the law of detachment, you continue to hold your intention or desire while giving up the need to know when or how it will come to you. This clears energy blocks and also frees the Universe to use the most effortless way to manifest your intention from the field of infinite possibilities.
In order to fully harness the Law of Detachment, you also have to get comfortable with uncertainty. Your attachment to the known must be replaced with faith in the unknown.
Now that I’m home from the DR, I’m conducting an energetic inventory to compare my desire for coconuts to some of my other intentions. Watch out for falling jeeps.
