Why Are You Reading This? Plus a Fantastical Giveaway.

by KB

Start With Why

This morning I started reading the book, “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action” by Simon Sinek.

The premise of “Start With Why” is that people and organizations who have a clear vision of WHY it is they do what they do, are more innovative, more influential, and more profitable. Though I’m not very far into the book, it’s already inspired me to get clear on my purpose with this website.

The flipside of the coin is also taking the time to discover WHY your customers, clients, fans or followers are drawn to you, which is why I’m writing this post.  All of a sudden I have a burning need for YOU to answer the following questions:

Why are you reading this?

Why do you visit my website?

What do I have that Huffington Post does not???

What color is your underwear???

OK that last one I don’t really need the answer to. Unless you really want to give it. I sense bonus points.

Now I know that sometimes it can be difficult to motivate yourself to leave a comment on a blog with it being winter and all.  Your fingers are cold, I get it.  So to sweeten the pot, I am giving a prize away to one lucky person who can bring themselves to commit to the painstakingly difficult commenting process.

That’s right, leave a comment below answering WHY YOU READ MY BLOG, why you follow me on Facebook/Twitter/Youtube or simply why you like me, and you could win one of the following fantastic prizes:

Door Number One – A four-pack of Mystic Masala ayurvedic tea light candles (check out yesterday’s post for the deets on Mystic Masala)

Door Number Two – A hardcover copy of the book “Trust Your Vibes” by Sonia Choquette

Door Number Three – A copy of Chopra Center meditation teacher davidji’s Guided Meditation CD

I’ll pick the winner on Friday and they will get their choice of ONE of the above prizes, plus a little handwritten note from me telling them how awesome they are, and maybe even a “KB LOVES ME” button.  So get typing. :)

1. I find the information useful, interesting and thought-provoking. (And funny)
2. I like your style, we’re in similar fields and I love your perspective.
3. KB. I looked, HP doesn’t have KB. :-) You have personality and I feel like I can connect with what you say better than HP.
4. Undie forecast: Black with a slight chance of none this afternoon.

I recently started following your blog after constantly seeing a friend of mine share your facebook comments. I find myself relating to a lot of what you say and in reading some of your older posts there were many that related to things I am currently going through. You are honest, inspiring, and funny – you show that even in trying to better ourselves we can still find humor.

1) I read your blogs because you are KB, my friend, who has fresh, new ways at expressing the Truth of who-We-Are and you and your ideas inspire me to be a better person.

2) I usually read your blogs from FaceBook but when it sends me to your blog I always smile at the pink hearts, and flowers and the love you send out from it.

3) I have no idea who Huffington Post is/are or could be. Not in my realm of acquaintances.

4) Depends on my mood.

I started following you on Facebook after I found your little video on letting go of worry and anxiety, which has helped me a LOT. Since then I like getting your note-lets in my FB feed. I can’t resist a giveaway, so I came over to your website.
You do appear to have a measure of genuine “enlightenment,” and I’m watching with interest to see you get more grounded with it, because you’re a wonderful teacher, but your feet are not yet back on the ground.I’d love to hear how it happened!
What you have that Huff Post doesn’t: you have seen into something deep and profound, which affects you on not just a purely intellectual level, but which permeates your being. Now I like your edgier and less predictable posts a lot, such as why you love presents (counter to political correctness) and what’s on your list.

Thanks Ellen! I do hope to wake up grounded one of these days :P

1 & 2: Reading your Blog is like “checking in” to positivity & Growth. Getting a new perspective or a nice reminder. With whatever you write, a slice of your personality comes through. When you “connect” with interesting people, each post creates a more 3 dimensional view of the person behind the words.

3: There is only 1 you, so the more YOU you can put into your posts, the less people can find the same experience elsewhere.

4. Depends…. no that came out wrong.. can we start over?

KB November 30, 2011 at 6:53 pm

LOL on the “depends”… thanks for your comment Jason! xo

Why are you reading this? …Well, to be honest I am reading this particular post because you said on twitter that if we read it we could win something fantastical! I really like to win fantastical things. :)

Why do you visit my website? …I don’t have time to visit as often as I’d like, but I have really been enjoying your tweets for at least a couple years now. Very inspiring. Very real.

What do I have that Huffington Post does not??? …I know of Huffington Post, but not much of their website. Guess they never caught my attention the way you do! …Your very relateable, and I like that! :)

What color is your underwear??? …If I told you I would be telling all of them ^ and I don’t think my hubby would be very happy with me. lol! But, they’re nice! ;)

I read your blog (and FB & Twitter posts) because I appreciate your point of view, style, and information…but mainly because you seem to stay focused on your overall message. There are so many resources out there that are full of info, but just don’t deliver it well. Your posts are personable, dependable, and convey a lot of personality at the same time!

I read this blog, follow you on facebook and twitter because your communications put me in a wonderful and powerful mood. I feel inspired to try to change things about myself from reading you. I enjoy the plain way you state the same thing that many others try to complicate. I enjoy that you tweet often and that I can always find something that I believe to be true or that makes me go hmm!!

Mainly because I like the way your personality shines through the blog (especially the newer posts). I’ve used a few things from your blog so the content as well. A lot of times it just gives me things to think about or consider…so inspiration would be one for sure.

Also, since I’m going through the same process of figuring out my own “why” through Simon Sinek’s course I’ve been thinking along these same lines too. I dont know how far you are in the book but one of the major premises is that YOUR why simple attracts people with similar beliefs…so in effect were not reading for you per se (though we sure do love ya!) but were on a deeper level reading for ourselves – because WE want to experience the things you talk about, WE want to think about the things you trigger etc. So when Sinek talks about Apple fans being so devoted it’s less about people believing in Apple but more about what Apple represents to them…and when those 2 “whys” (i.e. my own even if I know them and Apples) mesh then its all gravy!

So ultimately what I’m trying to say is when you figure out your own why and crystallize it…chances are that our deeper whys as to why we read your site (i.e. not just the superficial answers your might get) are pretty much the same as your whys towards writing it.

Just my 2 cents! =)

1. Last year I developed an interest in yoga after taking an online “Meditation Challenge” with Davidji. I typed in “anusara yoga” on Youtube and your awesome video was a result. (The production and music on that vid is fantastic, by the way.) That’s how I found your blog.
2. I’m a 42-year-old dude who until recently always had my ego as my internal reference point, with insecure and anxious thoughts guiding me to not-so-great results. I couldn’t separate myself from the negative thought patterns which I believed defined me. Meditation and daily inspirational support from you and others (Boston Buddha) help to reinforce the positive shift I’m making to improve life.
3. Clarity, inspiration and humor. Also, you are one of only four people I follow on Twitter: the others being the aforementioned Buddha from Beantown, Dandy Deepak and Peaches’ dad Davidji.
4. Red with navy stripes.

Wow… anusara, meditation, the Boston Buddha and davidji…. all of my favorites!! And I’m very honored to be included with those other 3 peeps you follow on twitter. Very cool.

And your underwear sounds lovely.

I visit your site because I know there will be something here that will perk me up when I’m feeling crappy. Unlike other personal development blogs, yours emanates a kind of earthy-ness and sweetness which I find soothing when things are going a bit tough. I also visit here because I can look around and imagine achieving some of the ‘goalposts’ of where I’d like my lifestyle to head: eg raw eating, developing myself more consciously, meditating everyday. You’re kinda like a role model to me! :)

I read your blog because it inspires me. Your honesty and authenticity are refreshing. Some days you say exactly what I need to hear. There is a quote from one of your old posts that I read very often and has become one of the principles that I live by:

“The nature of the Universe isn’t logic; it’s mystery. Mystery is the only path to follow if you want to lead a magical life. To live in this way, your decisions can’t be made by your logical mind. When you overcome the fear of uncertainty, you embrace the synchronicity of the unknown. A life lived in mystery is not a threat; it’s a life of magic and unlimited possibility.”

Thank you for that and everything else you do!

It may be too late to win anything out of this but I felt I must thank you for your posts that are so encouraging and uplifting.
I also got to learn a lot about raw veganism which I am currently not following but it has definitely given me inspiration to eat more raw fruit, vegetables and nuts if not anything else.
Too often, we berate ourselves for not living up to certain ideals that we think we should. Sites such as yours take the judgment out and help focus on what one’s true nature and desires are. I particularly loved your posts on self-esteem and why no relationship is a failure.
Keep up the good work! Merry Christmas and have a happy, healthy new year!
