Why I STILL See a Psychiatrist

Some of you may remember a candid article I wrote last summer entitled, “Why I See a Psychiatrist”. I received a ton of positive feedback from the post, including a thumbs-up from one of my she-roes, Cheryl Richardson.

Eight months have passed since I wrote that article and I’m healthier than ever in mind, body, and spirit. So I’m sure some of you are left wondering, “Is KB still seeing the shrink??”

The answer is yes. Here’s why.

Caring for your mental / emotional body is very similar to caring for your physical body. It requires dedication, consistency, and practice. Many people don’t even realize that their mental and emotional bodies need regular attention. For example, what do you do to keep these crucial aspects of yourself in-check??

I keep my mental and emotional life healthy and free of energetic clutter by seeing a shrink. Psychotherapy helps me un-earth repressed emotion, observe my habitual ways of thinking, and cultivate new and more beneficial belief patterns. Seeing a psychiatrist on a regular basis is literally transforming me from the inside out.

As I mentioned in my last post, I do not see a shrink in order to whine about “my story”. I know I am not a victim in my story; I’m the creator of it. But I can only create a better “story” if I am conscious of the deeply conditioned thoughts and beliefs that formulated the story in the first place.

I also do not see a shrink because “I have problems”. I don’t believe in problems, and even if I did I would probably look at them as challenges that are helping me grow. My biggest “problem” right now is that my dogs won’t stop eating their own poop (Why the heck do they do that??)

There is great power in taking ownership of your life. You can get to where you want to be, but only if you acknowledge that YOU are the only person responsible for where you are NOW. Once you take ownership of that, the real fun begins, because now you get to decide how this book is going to end. You get to become the conscious creator of your life experience.

The reason I’m writing about this topic is that I want people to realize that going to therapy can be a super-fantastic thing. You don’t have to feel ashamed if you need some help sorting out your thoughts and emotions. We ALL need help sorting out our thoughts and emotions, even if we don’t admit it.

I’m going to continue to see a psychiatrist as long as I find it helpful, which could be a really, really, REALLY long time.

Because just like an unfolding lotus flower… I am slowly but surely… awakening.

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.
- Carl Jung
